Sri Lanka\u2019s gem and jewellery sector, a vital contributor to the country\u2019s export earnings, took a decisive step toward the global stage on October 24, with the staging of the \u2018Sri Lanka Gem and Jewellery Exhibition and Marketplace\u2019 at the World Trade Centre (WTC), Colombo 01.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Held from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with free public admission, the event attracted a large number of local and international buyers and visitors, underscoring the strong appetite for Sri Lankan gemstones in both domestic and overseas markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Pacific Minerals (Pvt) Ltd., Director Dr. Thilakasiri Vitharana said the exhibition offers a significant platform for local gem traders, jewellery designers and exporters to promote their businesses. He announced plans to organise such events regularly, noting that the initiative would open new avenues for the industry in the global marketplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Industry observers say regular exhibitions of this kind bring buyers and sellers face to face, reduce reliance on intermediaries and allow Sri Lankan entrepreneurs to build direct international connections. For an island long celebrated for its sapphires and other precious stones, such visibility is essential to strengthening its reputation and securing better prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gemologist Satyajith Dharmapriya emphasised that a gemstone\u2019s true value lies in its \u2018tone\u2019, meaning its color and hue. He noted that the WTC provides comprehensive facilities for selecting, buying and selling high-quality stones with the most desirable tones, allowing buyers to evaluate quality in a professional setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Visitors and business professionals were also able to photograph and video their gemstones, helping them present the items attractively to prospective clients and identify the right customers for their sales. Such marketing support is increasingly important in a digital, image-driven trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dharmapriya extended an open invitation to anyone wishing to buy or sell gemstones and jewelry to take part in future exhibitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
