Kelani Valley Plantations PLC (KVPL), a leading regional plantation company under the Hayleys Plantations sector, is redefining sustainability through innovative circular solutions.

In partnership with SPJ Creation, KVPL has launched a strategic initiative to transform electronic waste into sustainable jewellery and creative, value-added products. The collaboration was formalised through the signing of a MoU on March 12, at Kelani Valley Plantations, marking a pioneering step in Sri Lanka’s transition toward circular economy practices and low-carbon innovation.

By converting e-waste into commercially viable, aesthetically appealing products, the initiative promotes green entrepreneurship, women engagement, supports circular economy principles and fosters community engagement. It also creates new livelihood opportunities by empowering local artisans and designers to participate in sustainable production systems.

Electronic waste is an escalating environmental concern both globally and in Sri Lanka, where over 20,000 metric tons are generated annually with limited management systems in place. In response, KVPL’s initiative offers a progressive and timely solution by transforming this growing waste stream into a source of sustainable value.

Aligned with KVPL’s sustainability agenda, the initiative supports its focus on responsible waste management, environmental stewardship and circular economy practices, while supporting carbon reduction, biodiversity conservation and efficient resource use.

“This partnership highlights our deliberate pursuit of world-class sustainability standards, where innovation and responsibility converge to address Sri Lanka’s evolving e-waste challenge. Through this initiative we are strengthening our commitment to responsible waste management while catalysing a new frontier of sustainable design, creative enterprise, and long-term environmental value creation. It also reinforces our broader vision of embedding sustainability into every layer of our business, creating measurable impact for communities, industries, and the environment at large.” KVPL, Director/CEO, Senaka Alwattegama noted.

This initiative focuses on collecting, repurposing, and upcycling discarded electronic materials into value-added, eco-friendly products, transforming waste into a resource of economic and environmental value.

SPJ Creation, Managing Director, Pavani Chandrasekara added; “At the heart of our work is a simple belief that what is often discarded can be transformed into something meaningful, beautiful, and valuable. We are truly grateful to KVPL for their strong commitment to sustainability and for trusting us as a partner in bringing this vision to life.”
