EDB intensifies drive to boost graphite exports through value addition

The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) is stepping up efforts to expand the country’s graphite industry by promoting value addition, strengthening industry partnerships and increasing access to international markets, as part of a broader strategy to boost mineral export earnings.

As part of this initiative, a team of EDB officials recently visited Bogala Graphite Lanka PLC, one of the world’s leading producers of premium natural vein graphite, to gain first-hand knowledge of the country’s graphite mining and processing operations.

The visit enabled officials to observe the complete graphite value chain, from underground mining and ore extraction to processing, grading, purification and export preparation. The EDB said the insights gained would help formulate strategies to enhance Sri Lanka’s mineral exports and strengthen the country’s position as a leading global supplier of high-value graphite products.

The initiative is in line with the National Export Development Plan (NEDP), which has identified minerals and mineral-based products as one of Sri Lanka’s priority export sectors. The plan recognises the country’s unique mineral resources, particularly its world-renowned vein graphite, as a key avenue for export diversification, investment attraction and increased foreign exchange earnings through value addition.

Sri Lanka is the only country in the world to commercially produce natural crystalline vein graphite, known for its exceptionally high carbon purity and superior crystalline structure. These qualities have created strong demand for Sri Lankan graphite in a wide range of advanced industrial applications, including lubricants, carbon brushes, brake pads, refractories and emerging graphene technologies.

Bogala Graphite Lanka PLC, which has more than 160 years of mining experience, has built a strong international reputation for supplying premium-quality graphite to global markets. The company continues to invest in modern processing technologies and sustainable mining practices, demonstrating the industry’s potential to move beyond exporting raw minerals to producing high-value, technology-driven mineral products.

During the visit, EDB officials also held discussions with the company’s management on challenges facing the graphite industry and measures needed to support its future growth.

The EDB said closer collaboration among government agencies, mining companies, research institutions and international technology partners would be crucial to unlocking the full potential of Sri Lanka’s graphite sector. It added that increased investment in research, advanced processing technologies and international marketing would enhance the industry’s global competitiveness while contributing to higher export earnings, skilled employment and long-term economic growth.
